Making a bid for an Annual Symposium
The Meetings Committee of the Biochemical Society invites its Special Interest Groups, academic research departments, individuals and other groupings of scientists to submit bids for the funding of a Harden Conference.

Your proposal needs to be submitted with the following headings and fulfil the specified criteria:
- Case
State the case for the Harden Conference specialist topic programme (half page A4) in terms of:
- attractiveness of the science,
- attractivness as a publication,
- timeliness,
- topicality,
- target audience
- Organizers
Name the organizers plus "joint with" if appropriate, their addresses, affiliations and naming which organization if not affiliated to the Biochemical Society.
- Title
Provide a working title.
- Proposed length
State the proposed length of programme (usually between two - six days).
- Venue
If you have one in mind, suggest a possible venue (Symposia will normally be held as part of a Society Main Meeting)
- Proposed speakers
List the proposed speakers (14-16 maximum), their topic titles, affiliation, and the country from which they are travelling.
- Commitment to Publish
The prime responsibility for securing manuscripts rests with the Symposium Organizers. Editorial Office of Portland Press Ltd. will assist the Organizers, as far as practicable, to chase speakers to meet deadlines. The organizer is responsible for the scientific veracity of the manuscripts. The Portland Press Ltd. Editorial office will arrange all matters relating to production, e.g. design, print run, price etc. If it does not prove possible to secure all manuscripts, the final decision on whether or not to publish will be taken by the Honorary Publications Secretary.

- Budget showing:
- speaker and organizer travel costs (average travel allowances shown below)
- number of nights accommodation,
- the realistic level of sponsorship to be raised
- the sources of sponsorship
- Competing/recent meetings
Give information, if known, about any competing meetings and the last known meeting on the topic in the UK/rest of the world.
*Agreement by the Honorary Meetings Secretary and the Chair of Portland Press Ltd. to fund and schedule the Symposium means that the organizer retains responsibility for the Annual Symposium (and the budget) and also becomes a member of the Meetings Committee. The Society's Meeting Office staff will liaise very closely with the organizer and will make most of the detailed arrangements.
Timetable for submission
The Meetings Committee will consider all proposals two years hence and not less than 18 months prior to the year in question.
