Introduction and Welcome

University College Cork (UCC) has over 12,000 students and 1,700 academic staff in a range of faculties including science, food science, medicine, engineering, law and arts. The department of biochemistry is a member of both the faculties of science and medicine and was first established in 1945 with Prof P.J. Drumm occupying the chair currently held by Prof Tom Cotter. The department has 12 full-time academic staff, 40 postgraduate students and 12 postdoctoral researchers.

Our very active research programme includes neurobiology, cell and molecular biology, bioinformatics, environmental science and medical aspects of biochemistry including the biochemical basis of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, malignant hyperthermia and central core disease. The colloquia comprising the 670th main meeting of the society reflect the diversity of this research.

Cork City is a dynamic seaport and industrial centre and the second city of the Irish Republic. It is an excellent base for exploring Munster, Ireland's southernmost province, which is particularly noted for its scenic coastline, seaside fishing villages and excellent restaurants. There are frequent direct flights connecting Cork with Dublin, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Paris and other centres as well as ferry connections with the UK and France.

We very much hope to welcome you to our beautiful campus to enjoy the unique atmosphere of meetings hosted in Irish universities.

Dr David Sheehan & Dr Cora O'Neill
