    About the Group

The former NAMBG has reconstituted as the Nucleic Acids Group, which is now a Subject Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry within the Chemical Biology Forum. This web site is an "informal IT-supported" Group  within the Biochemical Society. The IT Group is an informal part of the RSC Nucleic Acids Group. The NAG IT group will work closely with the Biochemical Society's Theme Panels, particularly Genes (Theme Panel I) and Molecular Structure and Function (Theme Panel II).

Potential meeting organisers and other Societies and Groups who have ideas for new meetings or other joint activities should contact Richard Bowater (r.bowater@uea.ac.uk, Tel:+44 (0) 1603 592186).

The purpose of the group is to promote the subject of nucleic acids (including aspects of their chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics), primarily via organization of meetings covering topics within the subject. The Group activities are administered by a committee which is also currently part of the new RSC Nucleic Acids Group. The members of the current Nucleic Acids Group committee are: David Lilley (Dundee, Chair), Rick Cosstick (Liverpool, Treasurer), Richard Bowater (UEA, Secretary), Mike Gait (Cambridge, Immediate Past Chair), Duncan Graham (Strathclyde), Jane Grasby (Sheffield), Steve Halford (Bristol), Penny Jeggo (Sussex), Jason Micklefield (UMIST), Mark Searcey (UEA) and Chris Smith (Cambridge).

The Group welcomes suggestions for meetings which will be channelled either through the Biochemical Society or the Royal Society of Chemistry as appropriate.

The Nucleic Acids Award Lecture (sponsored by Merck and Co. Inc.)

This lecture series was established in 1998 to honour world-renowned scientists who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of chemistry and/or biochemistry of nucleic acids. Award lectures are usually given annually in conjunction with conferences supported by the Nucleic Acids Group. The Award lecture series is generously sponsored by Merck and Co. Inc.

2005 Nucleic Acids Award lecture was given by Professor Greg Verdine (Harvard University, USA) at the Responses to DNA Damage conference in Sussex, September 2005.

2006 Nucleic Acids Award lecture was given by Professor Ignacio Tinoco (University of California, Berkeley, USA) at the Frontiers in Chemical Biology: Single Molecules conference in Cambridge, March 2006.

2007 Nucleic Acids Award lecture was given by Professor Jennifer Doudna (University of California, Berkeley) at the NACON VII conference, University of Sheffield, April 1-5, 2007.

2008 Nucleic Acids Award lecture will be given by Professor Martin Gellert (NIDDK, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA) at the Topo2008 conference, John Innes Centre, Norwich, July 20-24, 2008.

A maximum of two Bursaries are available towards the attendance costs at conferences in which an Award Lecture is given to support post-graduate research students or postdoctoral fellows within 5 years of receiving a Ph. D. Applications should include 1) a recommendation letter from a supervisor or head of department, 2) a copy of the abstract for an accepted poster or talk at the conference, 3) evidence of the registration/accommodation costs required.

Applications for bursaries should be made at least 8 weeks in advance of the meeting. Apply to: Dr M. J. Gait, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 2QH (mgait@mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk)

    Hutchinson Bursary Awards

Bursaries are available (maximum of £300 per applicant and £800 per conference) at the Trustees' discretion to support postgraduate students registered for a Ph. D. at a UK University to attend conferences or meetings approved by the Nucleic Acids Group. Applications should include 1) a recommendation letter from a supervisor or head of department, 2) a copy of the abstract for an accepted poster or talk at the conference, 3) evidence of the registration/accommodation costs required. Those granted bursaries are asked to provide a short report about their attendance after the meeting.
