Student Travel Bursaries for X1X International Congress , Toronto, Canada, 20-24 July 2003

The Executive Committee of the Biochemical Society have agreed to fund 10 student travel bursaries of �500 to assist younger members of the Society to travel to the X1X International Congress of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Toronto, Canada, 20-24 July 2003.

The bursaries are open to all student members of the Society provided that they:

  1. have submitted a poster abstract for the meeting. The poster has to show that they have made a significant contribution to the work presented.
  2. have been a student member of the Biochemical Society since 1 January 2003

Promega Young Biochemist 2002 final winner at Imperial College, London

On Tuesday 17 December 2002 the title of Promega Young Biochemist 2002 was awarded to Gemma Satterthwaite, University of Sheffield and GlaxoSmithKline for her talk on 'Differential gene expression in atherosclerotic human coronary arteries.
Her poster was originally selected to go forward to the final at Biochemical Society Meeting 677, Cardiff. Gemma has won a prize of �600 and a specially designed trophy.

Biochemical Society Best Poster Prize Winners from the Imperial College, London meeting

The first prize of �200 went to Aphrodite Vasilaki (Liverpool) whose poster (number 65) was titled 'Skeletal muscles of aged male mice fail to adapt following contractile activity'.

Second prize was awarded to Katherine Drummond (Birmingham) for poster number 85, titled 'Localisation of heparan sulfate 6-O-sulfotransferases 1, 2 and 3 in the developing mouse brain'.

Highly commended by the judges were Denis Soulet (poster number 47, unavailable online); Satomi Miwa (poster number 62); Mark Thomas (poster number 33); and C. Gendron (poster number 124).

Call for Biochemical Society Award Nominations for 2004

The deadline for submitting nominations is 1 March 2003
The Biochemical Society makes a series of prestigious awards that recognize research achievement. Awards are given every 1-3 years (refer to individual award descriptions), and the Awards Committee is currently calling for nominations for Society Awards in 2004. The full text of the associated lectures is available online. The lectures are given at Society meetings and published in Biochemical Society Transactions
